Corporate video, brand film or commercial: what's the difference?
A corporate video introduces your company, a brand film shows what you stand for, a commercial sells in 6 to 30 seconds. Lengths, uses and how to choose.

Corporate video, brand film and commercial differ in job, length and where they run. The corporate video shows who you are and runs on the website, at trade shows and in recruiting. The brand film shows why you exist and is the format people share. The commercial has one job: getting someone to click, buy or book. Even so, almost every enquiry we get starts with the words corporate video. Telling the three apart makes for a better brief and puts the budget into what reaches your goal.
MAD MIRROR STUDIOS has produced films for businesses in Ibiza, Barcelona, Mallorca and Germany since 2023, among them the brand film for Vanilla Beach Ibiza, the brand film for Catalina Gavà Mar near Barcelona and film and photos for Club de Golf Alcanada in Mallorca, plus production experience for ZDF and 3sat. This article explains the differences the way we explain them in a briefing.

The corporate video: the company introduces itself
A corporate video shows who you are: people, spaces, the way you work, your values. It used to run three to six minutes; today most sit between 90 and 180 seconds, because it plays on the website, in pitches, at trade shows and in recruiting, and nobody stays longer there. It is made to last two to three years, so prices, promotions and dates stay out of it.
The most common mistake is wanting to show everything. A corporate video that ticks off every department and every product feels like a guided tour. A through-line works better: a day in the company, one client project from enquiry to handover, or three people telling why they work here.

The brand film: the brand shows attitude
A brand film doesn't explain, it tells. It shows what a brand stands for through a story, a feeling, an attitude, usually in 60 to 180 seconds and without a product list. It runs at a launch, a repositioning, as pre-roll, on social media and in cinemas, and it is the format people share.
For Vanilla Beach in Ibiza we shot a brand film in 2023 that tells one day at the beach club, from the first coffee to the evening on the terrace. No menu, no opening hours, but the feeling of why you go there. The same shoot gave stills for Instagram, the website and the menu, and in 2026 the website and social media management followed. That is exactly the difference to the corporate video: the corporate video answers who you are, the brand film answers why you exist.

The commercial: one offer, one action
A commercial has one job: show a product or an offer so that someone clicks, buys or books. The lengths are set by the platforms: 6 seconds as a bumper, 15 seconds as the standard for social and streaming, 30 seconds for TV and cinema. A commercial is always delivered in several formats, vertical 9:16 for reels and stories, square 1:1 for feeds, 16:9 for YouTube and TV.
Because a commercial is paid media, everything is decided in the first two seconds. In the Chamelo Eyewear commercial, where every frame was generated with AI, the first shot shows the product in use before any logo appears. A commercial also gets tested: two or three versions of the opening, then the one that holds attention runs.
How to choose
The question is never which format is prettier, but what the film has to achieve. A simple mapping that holds in most briefings:
- Goal trust (website, applicants, buyers, investors): corporate video.
- Goal attitude and reach (launch, repositioning, social media, cinema): brand film.
- Goal sales or bookings (campaign, paid ads, season opening): commercial.
- Several goals: one shoot, several cuts. The brand film provides the material for corporate sequences and 15-second spots, if the script plans for it.
What all three share
Whatever the format, the film stands or falls with preparation. Real people instead of models when it is about the company. Clean sound, because bad sound makes people leave faster than a bad picture. Subtitles, because most viewers watch on a phone with the sound off. Cleared rights for music, people and places, so the film may still run in two years. And language versions in your customers' languages, by native speakers from our network.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a corporate video be?
A corporate video should run 90 to 180 seconds, plus 15 to 30 second cuts for social media. Anything over three minutes is watched only by applicants and investors who are interested anyway.
Is a promo video the same as a commercial?
Mostly, yes: both mean a film that sells an offer and runs as paid media. Commercial usually refers to the short lengths of 6 to 30 seconds, promo video also covers longer product or campaign films. Both differ from the corporate video in their goal: sales instead of trust.
Can a brand film sell as well?
A brand film sells indirectly: it makes a brand recognizable and memorable, which lowers the cost of every later campaign. It is not meant to sell directly, that is what the commercial is for. Packing both into one film usually delivers neither.
Do I need actors for a commercial?
No, many commercials work without actors: products, hands, places and real customers carry them. Actors or models are needed when a scene has to land exactly or the product is shown on a person, for example fashion or eyewear.
How many shooting days does a corporate video take?
A corporate video usually takes one or two shooting days for a company with one site, more with several sites or when seasons should be shown. The effort depends more on preparation than on the camera.
Which format works for recruiting?
For recruiting, the corporate video with the focus on people works best, plus short vertical clips of individual team members for social media. Applicants want to see who they will work with and what the day looks like, not the product range.
